West Northamptonshire’s crime rate in November 2023 stood at 7.2 per 1,000 residents, placing it 4% below the UK average. This figure, while modest, masks notable variations in crime types, with violence and sexual offences accounting for 37.3% of all reported incidents—making them the most prevalent category. Anti-social behaviour followed closely at 15.1%, and vehicle crime, at 9.6%, emerged as a significant outlier, 40% above the UK average. These patterns may be influenced by the area’s geography, which blends urban centres with rural expanses, creating distinct hotspots for different crime types. The rise in vehicle crime, for instance, could be linked to the influx of shoppers and drivers during Black Friday, while anti-social behaviour may be tied to the timing of Bonfire Night events. Conversely, shoplifting and other thefts saw modest declines, due to increased retail security measures. Seasonal factors, including the transition to darker evenings and the end of the festive shopping season, may also have contributed to the overall reduction in crime compared to the previous month. The data highlights the combination of local demographics, infrastructure, and seasonal events in shaping crime patterns, underscoring the need for tailored policing strategies.
