In January 2024, Devizes recorded 136 crimes across its built-up area, equating to 7.6 crimes per 1,000 residents—a rate 2.7% above the UK average of 7.4. This figure, while modest in absolute terms, translates to 4 crimes per day for a population of 17,981, highlighting the local frequency of criminal activity. The most prevalent crime types were violence and sexual offences (36.8% of total incidents), anti-social behaviour (15.4%), and vehicle crime (11.8%). These patterns align with the area's character as a historic market town with a mix of residential and commercial zones. The seasonal context of January—post-holiday, shorter days, and reduced retail footfall—may contribute to the dominance of property crimes and anti-social behaviour, as outdoor activity diminishes. Violence and sexual offences, however, remain high, with a rate 8% above the UK average. This could reflect the town's social dynamics, including the presence of multiple schools and a commuter population that may intersect with local crime hotspots. Vehicle crime, which surged by 433% from December, may be partly explained by colder weather reducing vehicle visibility and increased homecomings during the post-Christmas period. The data also reveals that shoplifting and other theft categories are 30% below the UK average, due to the town's smaller retail footprint compared to larger urban centres.
