Anti-social behaviour emerged as the dominant crime category in Stourport-on-Severn during May 2023, accounting for 31.3% of all reported incidents. This was followed by violence and sexual offences (21.7%) and criminal damage and arson (12.2%). The overall crime rate of 6.1 per 1,000 residents placed the area 23.8% below the UK average of 8.0, underscoring its relatively low level of criminal activity compared to the national context. Seasonal factors in May, including longer evenings and increased socialising, likely contributed to the prominence of anti-social behaviour, which is often associated with public spaces and communal areas. The area’s crime profile suggests a balance between property-related offences and personal crimes, with property crimes (41 incidents) slightly outnumbering violent crimes (25 incidents). However, the absence of major spikes in burglary or theft from the person, which are common in tourist-heavy or high-density urban areas, indicates that Stourport-on-Severn’s crime profile is shaped more by local social dynamics than external pressures. The relatively low rate of violent crime, particularly the 53% deficit compared to the UK average for violence and sexual offences, may be influenced by the area’s smaller, more tightly knit community structure, which could foster informal social control mechanisms. Nonetheless, the significant gap between local anti-social behaviour rates and the UK average—43% above—raises questions about the specific local conditions driving this trend. While the area’s overall safety is evident, the prominence of anti-social behaviour highlights the need for targeted community engagement and policing strategies that address the root causes of such incidents.
