December 2023 saw Cleveleys record a crime rate of 7.5 per 1,000 residents, placing it 4.2% above the UK average. The area’s crime profile was shaped by seasonal factors, with violence and sexual offences dominating at 34.4% of all incidents, followed by anti-social behaviour (19.4%) and shoplifting (10.8%). The festive season likely contributed to these trends, as Christmas shopping and the closure of homes during holidays may have influenced patterns. Violence and sexual offences, while aligning with the UK average, remain a significant concern, particularly given the proximity to the town’s coastal location, where social interactions during the holiday period could amplify such incidents. Anti-social behaviour, however, was higher than the UK rate, suggesting localised pressures in public spaces. Shoplifting’s surge—63% above the UK average—corresponds with the peak of Christmas shopping.8 per 1,000 is still relatively low. The balance between property and violent crime tilted slightly toward the latter, with violent offences accounting for 34.4% compared to 28.3% for property crimes. This dynamic may reflect the area’s character as a built-up coastal town, where seasonal tourism and local community activity intersect. The absence of significant spikes in burglary or vehicle crime, save for the dramatic 300% increase in the latter, indicates that most property-related crimes remained stable. These findings underscore the influence of both national trends and Cleveleys’ specific seasonal rhythms on its crime picture.
