## Arlo Camera Won't Reset? Your Definitive Troubleshooting Guide
A factory reset is the ultimate troubleshooting step for an unresponsive or malfunctioning Arlo camera. It can solve a wide range of issues, from connectivity problems to setup failures. But what do you do when the camera itself refuses to reset? This guide will walk you through the correct procedures and alternative methods to get your Arlo camera back to its factory settings.
### Why a Reset is Necessary
A factory reset, also known as a hard reset, wipes all the custom settings from your camera. This includes the Wi-Fi network it's connected to and its link to your Arlo account. It's a clean slate, forcing the device back to its original state, which is often necessary when:
- The camera is completely unresponsive.
- It fails to connect or sync with your Base Station or SmartHub.
- You are selling or giving the camera to someone else.
- You've tried all other troubleshooting steps without success.
## The Standard Reset Procedure: Getting it Right
The most common reason for a failed reset is an incorrect procedure. Timing and duration are critical.
1. Ensure Adequate Power
A reset process requires consistent power. A camera with a critically low battery may fail mid-process.
- For battery-powered cameras (Arlo Pro, Ultra, etc.): Make sure the battery is charged to at least 50%. For best results, connect the charging cable during the reset attempt.
- For wired cameras (Arlo Q): Ensure it is plugged into a known-working power outlet.
2. Locate the Correct Button
The reset/sync button's location and appearance differ between models:
- Arlo Ultra, Pro 3, Pro 4: A small button on the bottom of the camera housing.
- Arlo Pro, Pro 2: A small pinhole, often located on the back or near the charging port, that requires a paperclip to press.
- Arlo Wire-Free: Inside the battery compartment.
3. The 15-Second Rule
This is the most crucial step.
- Bring the camera close to your Arlo Base Station or router.
- Press and HOLD the sync/reset button.
- Do not release it. Continue holding the button for a full 15 seconds.
- After 15 seconds, the camera's LED light should flash an amber colour. This is the signal that the reset has been successful.
- Release the button. The camera will now reboot.
If you release the button after only 5-10 seconds, you will likely only reboot the camera, not reset it.
## What to Do When the Button Method Fails
If you've followed the procedure above multiple times and the amber light never flashes, the button may be faulty or the camera's firmware may be frozen. The next best method is to reset it via the Arlo app.
### The "Remove Device" Method
Removing the camera from your account effectively de-authorises it and forces it into a default state, ready for a fresh setup.
- Open the Arlo App: Log in to your account.
- Navigate to Settings: Tap the gear icon.
- Select "My Devices": Find the list of your Arlo products.
- Choose the Problem Camera: Tap on the camera that you want to reset.
- Scroll and Remove: Scroll to the bottom of the device info page and tap "Remove Device".
- Confirm: You will be asked to confirm your choice. Proceed with the removal.
Once the device is removed, its link to your account is severed. You will now need to add it back as if it were a brand new camera by using the "Add New Device" option in the app and following the on-screen sync instructions. This process is often just as effective as a physical button reset.
