Is Your Canary Camera Providing a Blurry or Grainy Night Vision Feed?
Your Canary camera is a guardian for your home, and its ability to see clearly in the dark is one of its most critical features. When the night vision image becomes blurry, grainy, or washed out, it can create a blind spot in your security. The good news is that the cause is usually simple and easy to fix.
This guide will help you diagnose the reason for your Canary's poor night vision quality and provide you with straightforward steps to restore a sharp, clear picture.
## Step 1: Clean the Camera Lens and Housing
This might seem obvious, but it is the number one cause of blurry night vision. Over time, a fine layer of dust, fingerprints, or other smudges can accumulate on the lens. While it may not be very noticeable during the day, the powerful infrared (IR) light used for night vision will illuminate these imperfections, resulting in a hazy or blurry image.
- Cleaning Method:
- Unplug your Canary camera.
- Take a clean, dry microfibre cloth (the type used for cleaning glasses or phone screens is perfect).
- Gently wipe the black lens area to remove all smudges and dust.
- Wipe down the entire front surface of the Canary as well.
- Plug the camera back in and check the feed after a few minutes.
## Step 2: Check for and Eliminate IR Reflection
If your image appears foggy, has a bright white ring, or is completely washed out, you are likely dealing with IR reflection. This occurs when the night vision LEDs emit infrared light that bounces off a nearby surface and shines directly back into the lens, blinding the camera.
- Shooting Through Glass: Never place your Canary to look through a window at night with night vision on. The IR lights will create a massive glare on the glass, making it impossible to see outside. If you must monitor through a window, you will need to turn off night vision in the Canary app and rely on external lighting.
- Nearby Objects: Ensure the camera isn't placed too close to a wall, a shelf, or any other object that could reflect the light. Try moving the Canary a few inches away from surrounding surfaces or changing its angle slightly.
## Step 3: Assess Your Wi-Fi Connection
A poor Wi-Fi signal can also degrade image quality, especially at night. When the connection is weak, your Canary has to compress the video file more heavily to successfully upload it to the cloud. This heavy compression can manifest as a grainy, blocky, or pixelated image.
- Check Signal Strength: Try moving your Canary closer to your Wi-Fi router temporarily. If the image quality improves, you know that signal strength is a factor.
- Improve Your Signal: Consider moving your router to a more central location or investing in a Wi-Fi extender to provide a stronger signal to the area where your Canary is located.
## Step 4: Power Cycle Your Canary
Sometimes, a simple reboot can clear up temporary software or hardware glitches.
- Unplug your Canary camera from the wall outlet.
- Wait for at least 60 seconds. This allows the internal components to fully discharge.
- Plug the camera back in.
- Give the device a few minutes to boot up, reconnect to the network, and begin streaming again.
By following these troubleshooting steps, you can easily resolve the most common causes of blurry night vision and ensure your Canary camera continues to provide high-quality surveillance, day and night.
