Troubleshooting Missing Features on Your Geeni Device
It can be confusing when a feature you expect to see on your Geeni smart home device is either not there or is visible but greyed out in the app. This issue can happen with cameras, smart bulbs, plugs, and other devices.
This guide will help you understand the common reasons why features might be missing and provide you with a clear, step-by-step process to troubleshoot the problem.
Step 1: Update Everything
The most frequent cause of missing features is outdated software or firmware. Manufacturers regularly release updates to introduce new functionality, improve existing features, and fix bugs.
Update the Geeni App
- Go to the App Store (for iOS) or Google Play Store (for Android).
- Search for the "Geeni" app.
- If an "Update" button is available, tap it to install the latest version.
Update the Device Firmware
Firmware is the software that runs on the smart device itself.
- Open the Geeni app and select the device you want to check.
- Tap the pencil icon or the three dots in the top-right corner to open the device Settings.
- Look for an option called Firmware Update or Check for Firmware Update.
- If an update is available, the app will guide you through the installation process. Do not unplug the device during the firmware update.
After updating both the app and the device firmware, check to see if the missing feature has appeared.
Step 2: Verify Device Model and Compatibility
Geeni produces a wide variety of smart products, and features can differ significantly between models.
- Check the Packaging and Manual: Revisit the original packaging and user manual for your device. They should list the key features supported by that specific model.
- Compare Similar Devices: If you have two devices that seem similar (e.g., two smart plugs), but one has more features (like energy monitoring), it's because they are different models with different hardware capabilities. You cannot add a hardware-based feature like energy monitoring to a device that wasn't built with it.
- Product Page: Look up your exact product model on the Geeni website to see its official list of specifications and features.
Step 3: Check for Subscription-Only Features
For some devices, particularly security cameras, Geeni may reserve certain advanced features for customers with a paid Geeni Smart cloud subscription.
- Examples: These can include longer video recording history, person detection, or customisable motion activity zones.
- How to Check: Open the Geeni app and look for a "Geeni Smart" or "Subscription" section. This will detail the premium features that are unlocked with a paid plan. If the feature you are missing is listed there, it is not available on the free service tier.
Step 4: Review Device-Specific Settings and Modes
Sometimes a feature is unavailable because the device is in a conflicting mode.
- Smart Bulb Example: A colour-changing bulb might have separate "White Mode" and "Colour Mode" tabs. If you are in "White Mode," the colour wheel will be hidden or greyed out. You must switch to "Colour Mode" to access it.
- Camera Example: A setting for "Continuous Recording" might be disabled if you have selected an "Event Recording" only mode. You have to choose one or the other.
Explore all the settings and tabs within the device's control screen in the Geeni app to ensure you haven't overlooked a simple mode switch. If you've gone through all these steps and the feature is still missing, it is very likely not supported by your specific device model.
