How to Fix Geeni Camera 'Storage Full' and SD Card Issues
A Geeni smart camera is a great way to keep an eye on your home, but its effectiveness relies on its ability to record footage. If you're encountering a "Storage Full" error or finding that your camera has stopped recording, the issue almost always lies with the microSD card. This guide will help you resolve these common problems.
### Understanding How Geeni Cameras Use SD Cards
Geeni cameras are designed to use "loop recording." This means that when the microSD card becomes full, the camera should automatically overwrite the oldest footage to make space for new recordings. It should never simply stop recording.
If you receive a "Storage Full" notification or notice gaps in your timeline, it's a clear sign that something is wrong with the recording process.
### Cause 1: Loop Recording is Disabled
While it should be on by default, it's worth checking this setting first.
- Open the Geeni app and select your camera.
- Tap the three dots in the top-right corner to open the Settings menu.
- Go to Storage Settings or SD Card Settings.
- Ensure that the Loop Recording toggle is switched ON.
### Cause 2: SD Card Corruption or Errors
This is the most common cause of storage problems. MicroSD cards can develop errors over time due to constant use, power cuts, or low quality.
The Solution: Format the SD Card in the App
Formatting erases everything on the card and fixes underlying file system errors. It's essential to do this through the Geeni app, not on a computer, as the camera uses a specific format.
- Go to your camera's Settings in the Geeni app.
- Navigate to SD Card Settings.
- You should see the card's capacity and used space.
- Tap the Format SD Card option.
- Confirm that you want to erase all data.
- The process will take a few minutes. Once complete, the camera will restart, and the card should show as empty and function correctly.
If the app fails to format the card or the card is not recognised at all, it's time to physically inspect it.
### Cause 3: Physical Card Issues or Poor Quality
Not all microSD cards are suitable for the demands of a security camera.
- Power Down: Before removing or inserting the SD card, always unplug the camera from its power source to prevent corruption.
- Remove and Re-insert: Carefully eject the SD card from its slot. Check the metal contacts for any dirt or grime. Gently wipe them with a dry, soft cloth and re-insert the card firmly until it clicks into place. Power the camera back on and see if it's now recognised.
- Use a High-Endurance Card: Standard microSD cards are not designed for the 24/7 read/write cycles of a security camera. They will fail much sooner. For reliability, invest in a High-Endurance or Industrial grade microSD card from a reputable brand. These are specifically built for this purpose.
- Beware of Counterfeits: The market is flooded with fake microSD cards that report a large capacity but are actually much smaller and very unreliable. Always buy from an authorised retailer to ensure you are getting a genuine product.
If you have formatted a known-good, high-endurance card in the app and the problems persist, the issue may lie with the camera's hardware itself, and you should contact Geeni support.
