Imou Camera Alert Sounds Not Working? Here's the Fix
If your Imou camera detects motion but delivers silent notifications — or the camera's built-in siren is not triggering — the problem is almost always one of three things: phone OS notification settings that silenced the Imou Life app, in-app alarm output settings that were reset by a firmware update, or Do Not Disturb mode blocking alerts at the OS level.
This guide addresses each cause in sequence.
Quick Checks First
These take under 60 seconds and fix the majority of missing-sound issues:
- Check phone volume: Ensure your phone is not in silent or vibrate-only mode. Alert sounds require media or notification volume to be above zero.
- Check Do Not Disturb: On both Android and iOS, Do Not Disturb or Focus modes suppress notification sounds. Disable or add Imou Life as an exception.
- Check app notification channel settings (Android): Go to Settings → Apps → Imou Life → Notifications. Find the motion alert channel and confirm it is not set to 'Silent' or 'Low importance'.
- Check iOS notification sounds: Go to Settings → Notifications → Imou Life → Sounds, and confirm a tone is assigned.
- Check in-app alarm settings: Open the Imou Life app → select your camera → Device Settings → Alarm Settings. Confirm 'Alert Sound' is enabled.
Fixing Silent Push Notifications
Android
Android's notification channel system means a single app can have multiple notification channels, each with independent sound settings. Imou Life creates separate channels for different alert types (motion, offline, low battery). If one channel gets set to silent — which can happen after an app update — alerts from that channel will arrive soundlessly.
- Open Settings → Apps → Imou Life → Notifications.
- Look for channels named 'Motion Alert', 'Device Alert', or similar.
- For each channel: tap it, set Importance to High or Urgent, and assign a notification sound.
- If channels are missing, force-stop the app (Settings → Apps → Imou Life → Force Stop) and reopen it to recreate them.
iOS
- Open Settings → Notifications → Imou Life.
- Confirm Allow Notifications is on.
- Under Alerts, ensure Sounds is ticked.
- Tap Sound and select an alert tone (not 'None').
- In Focus settings, check that any active Focus mode allows Imou Life notifications.
Enabling the Camera's Built-In Siren
Imou Ranger 2 and Cruiser 2 cameras have a built-in audible alarm that can be triggered automatically on motion detection. This is disabled by default and must be enabled manually.
- Open the Imou Life app and select your camera.
- Go to Device Settings → Alarm Settings.
- Enable Motion Detection and set sensitivity to Medium or High.
- Under Alarm Output, enable Buzzer (or Siren on some firmware versions).
- Set Alarm Duration to your preferred length (5–30 seconds).
- Save and test by walking in front of the camera.
Note: The Imou Cell Go (battery/solar model) does not have a built-in siren — alert sounds for the Cell Go are phone notifications only.
After Firmware or App Updates
Firmware updates on Imou cameras can reset alarm output settings to their defaults (usually off). After any camera firmware update:
- Go to Device Settings → Alarm Settings and re-enable Buzzer/Siren output.
- Confirm that motion detection is still active — firmware updates can also reset detection sensitivity.
After Imou Life app updates on Android, notification channels may be recreated with lower importance. Follow the Android steps above to restore sound.
Integrating Alert Sounds with Alexa or Google Home
If you use a smart speaker, you can route Imou motion alerts through it for an audible announcement in any room.
Alexa
- Open the Alexa app → More → Skills & Games.
- Search for Imou Life and enable the skill.
- Link your Imou account.
- Go to Devices → Cameras, find your Imou camera, and enable Announcement for motion alerts.
- Alexa will announce motion events on any Echo speaker in your home.
Google Home
- Open the Google Home app → Settings → Works with Google.
- Link your Imou Life account.
- Create a Routine triggered by your Imou camera's motion, with the action 'Announce' on a Google Nest speaker.
Root Causes
- Phone notification channel silenced: Most common cause of silent push alerts on Android after app updates.
- In-app alarm output disabled: The Ranger 2 and Cruiser 2 built-in siren is disabled by default and reset by firmware updates.
- Do Not Disturb or Focus modes: iOS Focus mode and Android Do Not Disturb block notification sounds regardless of channel settings.
- Firmware reset: Alarm settings on the camera revert to default (off) after firmware updates.
- Imou Cell Go has no siren: Battery model has no built-in alarm; alerts are push notifications only.
A More Reliable Alternative
If you need guaranteed audible alerts when motion is detected — particularly at night or when your phone is on silent — consumer camera notification systems have a fundamental limitation: they depend on your phone receiving a cloud push notification, which fails during internet outages or phone Do Not Disturb periods. scOS uses an on-site Intelligence Hub that triggers local deterrents (siren, lights) directly on motion detection, without depending on cloud notification delivery or phone settings. Detection and response happen within seconds on the local network, regardless of internet connectivity.
Prevention
- After every Imou Life app update, check notification channel settings on Android.
- After every camera firmware update, verify alarm output settings in Device Settings → Alarm Settings.
- Add Imou Life as an allowed app in your Focus/Do Not Disturb settings if you rely on it for security alerts.
- For whole-home audible alerts, use the Alexa or Google Home integration as a secondary alert channel.
When to Contact Imou Support
If the camera's built-in siren is enabled in the app but still does not sound when triggered, this may indicate a hardware fault with the camera's speaker. Contact Imou support at www.imoulife.com/support with your camera model and firmware version. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, UK consumers have up to 6 years to claim faulty goods — if the speaker has failed within the warranty period, request a repair or replacement.
