Your Kuna Camera May Have Been Hacked — Here's How to Fix It
If your Kuna camera is displaying unusual activity — such as unexpected recordings, unauthorized users in the app, or erratic LED behaviour — this guide will help you secure it and restore normal function. Follow these steps to address the issue and prevent future breaches.
Quick Fixes to Try First
Before diving into advanced troubleshooting, try these 30-second checks to address common causes:
- Check the Kuna App for unauthorized users: Open the app and navigate to Device Health → Shared Users. Remove any unfamiliar accounts immediately.
- Verify LED status: A constant red light or rapid flashing may indicate a compromise. Hold the reset button on the back of the device (for the Kuna DualCam) or underside (for the Kuna Floodlight) for 5 seconds to check for a reset prompt.
- Restart the Kuna App: Force-close and relaunch the app to refresh its connection to your camera.
- Ensure battery is charged: For battery-powered models, check the Battery Level in the app. Charge fully if below 20%.
- Confirm Wi-Fi band: Open the Kuna App and ensure your router is broadcasting on the 2.4GHz band (not 5GHz).
Check Your Kuna Camera's Wi-Fi Settings
Is your camera battery-powered or wired?
- Battery-powered → Check battery level in the app — charge fully if below 20%
- Wired → Check the transformer voltage at the junction box — must supply 16-24V AC
Ensure Wi-Fi Band Compatibility
Kuna cameras require a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network for stable connectivity. Open the Kuna App, go to Device Health → Network Connection, and confirm your router is broadcasting on the correct band. If your router supports dual bands, ensure the camera is connected to the 2.4GHz signal (not 5GHz). Avoid using mesh networks or Wi-Fi extenders unless explicitly supported by Kuna.
Review Signal Strength
In the Kuna App, navigate to Device Health → Network Connection. The signal strength should read -70dBm or better. If it's weaker, move the camera closer to the router or reduce interference from other devices. Avoid placing the camera near metal objects or thick walls.
Update Your Kuna Camera's Firmware
Check for Available Updates
Firmware updates often include critical security patches. Open the Kuna App, go to Device Health → Firmware Update, and follow the prompts. If an update is available, select Update Now and ensure the camera remains connected to power during the process.
Confirm Update Completion
After updating, check the Firmware Version in the Kuna App under Device Health → Firmware Update. The version should match the latest release. If the update fails, retry it or consult Kuna's support documentation.
Perform a Factory Reset
Resetting the Kuna DualCam Video Doorbell
- Remove the doorbell from its mount.
- Locate the reset button on the back of the device.
- Hold the button for 15 seconds until the LED ring flashes rapidly.
- Re-pair the device via the Kuna App by navigating to Add Camera → Select Model → Follow On-Screen Instructions.
Resetting the Kuna Camera Floodlight
- Ensure the floodlight is powered on.
- Locate the reset button on the underside of the housing.
- Hold the button for 15 seconds until the LED indicator flashes to confirm the reset.
- Re-pair the device via the Kuna App by navigating to Add Camera → Select Model → Follow On-Screen Instructions.
Review Access Logs and Shared Users
Check for Unauthorized Access
Open the Kuna App and navigate to Device Health → Shared Users. Review the list of users with access to your camera. Remove any accounts you do not recognize. If you suspect a breach, change your account password immediately and enable two-factor authentication in your account settings.
Monitor Motion Detection Settings
Go to Device Health → Motion Detection Settings in the Kuna App. Ensure the camera is not in a low-power mode that could allow unauthorized access. Adjust sensitivity settings as needed to avoid false positives or missed alerts.
Root Causes of Kuna Camera Hacks
The most common cause of a hacked Kuna camera is weak or default passwords combined with unsecured Wi-Fi networks. Older firmware versions may also contain vulnerabilities that hackers can exploit. UK-specific challenges, such as older housing stock with thick walls or interference from other wireless devices, can exacerbate connectivity issues and make cameras more susceptible to breaches. Kuna cameras are designed to work with 2.4GHz Wi-Fi networks, but signal degradation can lead to unstable connections and potential security risks.
Prevention and Long-Term Care
Enable Two-Factor Authentication
In your Kuna account settings, enable two-factor authentication to add an extra layer of security. This ensures that even if your password is compromised, unauthorized users cannot access your account.
Regularly Update Firmware
Firmware updates often include critical security patches. Ensure your camera's firmware is always up to date by checking Device Health → Firmware Update in the Kuna App.
Monitor Access Logs
Regularly review the Shared Users section in the Kuna App to ensure no unauthorized accounts have been added. Remove any unfamiliar users immediately.
Avoid Public Wi-Fi for Camera Management
Never use public Wi-Fi networks (e.g. coffee shops, airports) to access your Kuna camera or account. These networks are often unsecured and can be exploited by hackers.
Full disclosure: we built scOS to address exactly this — the frustration of cameras that depend on Wi-Fi to function. scOS uses permanently powered cameras connected via ethernet.
Replacement Decisions
Kuna cameras typically last 3-5 years for battery-powered models and 5-8 years for wired models. Signs that replacement is needed include frequent firmware failures, inability to update, or persistent connectivity issues even after following all troubleshooting steps. UK consumers have up to 6 years to claim faulty goods under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (5 years in Scotland). If your camera is beyond its expected lifespan and troubleshooting has failed, consider professional installation or replacement with a newer model.
