Merkury Camera Not Recording? A Guide to Local Storage
If you have a Merkury smart camera and are wondering why it is not recording footage, you have come to the right place. These affordable and popular cameras often cause confusion regarding storage. This guide will clarify why your camera might not have local storage and how to enable recording.
The Merkury Storage Model: Cloud and SD Card
Merkury cameras, which typically use the Geeni smart home app, are primarily designed with two storage methods in mind. Understanding these is key to getting your camera to record.
- Cloud Storage: The primary and most promoted method is their subscription-based cloud storage service. When you subscribe, video clips triggered by motion are automatically uploaded and stored online. This keeps your footage safe from local theft or damage but comes with a recurring monthly fee.
- MicroSD Card: Many, but crucially not all, Merkury camera models include a microSD card slot for local storage. This allows you to record video directly onto a card inside the camera, avoiding monthly fees.
Problem: I Cannot Find a MicroSD Card Slot
It is very common for users to assume all cameras have an SD slot. However, some Merkury models are "cloud-only" to keep the initial purchase price as low as possible.
- Check Your Model: Carefully inspect your camera. The slot is often hidden under a small rubber flap, sometimes near the lens on pan-and-tilt models, or on the side or back of fixed models.
- Consult the Manual: If you cannot find it, check the original packaging and user manual. The specifications will clearly state whether microSD card support is a feature of your specific model.
- If No Slot Exists: If your camera does not have a slot, your only option for recording video is to subscribe to the Geeni cloud storage plan offered through the app.
Problem: My Camera Is Not Detecting the SD Card
If your camera has a slot but is not recording to the card, follow these troubleshooting steps. This is the most common issue users face.
- Use the Right Card: You must use a Class 10 or higher microSD card. Using older, slower cards (like Class 4 or 6) will not work. For best results, use a card from a well-known brand.
- Check the Capacity: Most Merkury cameras support a maximum capacity of 128GB. Ensure your card is not larger than the maximum supported by your model.
- Format the Card in the App: This is the most critical step. Do not format the SD card on your computer. You must format it from within the Merkury/Geeni app. Go to your camera's settings, find the storage settings, and select the "Format SD Card" option. This will erase the card and set it up correctly for the camera.
- Re-insert the Card: Power down the camera, carefully remove and re-insert the microSD card, ensuring it clicks into place, and then power the camera back on.
Can I Use an NVR or Other Local Storage?
Unfortunately, no. Merkury cameras are part of a closed ecosystem. They do not support industry standards like ONVIF or provide an RTSP stream. This means you cannot connect them to a Network Video Recorder (NVR), a NAS, or third-party surveillance software like Blue Iris. Your only storage options are the ones provided by the manufacturer: a compatible microSD card or their cloud service.
