Ring Package Detection Not Working? A Troubleshooting Guide
Ring's Package Detection feature is a fantastic tool for knowing the moment a delivery arrives on your doorstep. However, when it doesn't work as expected, or the option is missing entirely, it can be frustrating. This guide will help you understand the requirements for this feature and how to configure it for the best results.
Key Requirements for Package Detection
Before you start troubleshooting, it's crucial to understand that Package Detection is not available on all Ring devices. Its availability depends on two main factors:
- A Compatible Device: The feature is generally available on newer, more advanced Ring doorbells and cameras. It requires more processing power than standard motion detection. It is typically not available on older or battery-only models like the original Ring Video Doorbell. You must have a compatible device like the Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2, Video Doorbell (2nd Gen), or other newer models.
- An Active Ring Protect Subscription: Package Detection is considered a "Smart Alert" and is a premium feature. You must have an active Ring Protect subscription (Basic, Plus, or Pro) to access it.
If you don't meet both of these requirements, the feature will not be available to you.
How to Enable and Configure Package Detection
If you have a compatible device and a subscription, but it's still not working, let's check the settings.
- Open the Ring app and navigate to your doorbell's Dashboard.
- Tap the settings gear icon and go to Motion Settings.
- Select Smart Alerts.
- Here, you should see an option for Package Detection. Tap on it.
- Enable the Feature: Make sure the toggle for Package Detection is turned on.
- Customise the Package Zone: This is the most important step for accuracy.
- You will be shown your camera's view. Draw a box that specifically covers the area where packages are most likely to be left.
- Don't make the zone too large. A smaller, more focused zone is better. Avoid including busy sidewalks or streets.
- Ensure the zone covers the ground where the package will sit.
- Adjust the Sensitivity Slider: You can adjust the sensitivity for package alerts, just like with motion alerts. If you're missing alerts, try increasing the sensitivity slightly.
Tips for Improving Accuracy
If you have the feature enabled but find it's unreliable, these tips can dramatically improve its performance.
1. Ensure a Clear View
The camera must be able to clearly see the package.
- No Obstructions: Make sure there are no plants, pillars, or decorations blocking the view of your delivery area.
- Correct Angle: The camera should be angled so that it looks down on the delivery spot. If the camera is mounted too low, it may not get a clear "top-down" view of the box, which can confuse the detection algorithm.
2. Good Lighting is Essential
The detection algorithm relies on being able to clearly identify the shape of a box.
- Daylight: The feature works best in good, clear daylight.
- Night-time: For the feature to work at night, your porch must be well-lit. The camera's own infrared night vision is often not enough for the algorithm to reliably identify a package. A good porch light that turns on with motion is highly recommended.
3. Manage Your Expectations
- Package Size and Shape: The algorithm is trained on standard box shapes. Unusually shaped packages, soft envelopes, or grocery bags may not be detected.
- Placement: If the delivery driver leaves the package just outside your defined zone, the camera won't trigger a specific package alert.
By ensuring you have the right device, an active subscription, and a well-configured detection zone with a clear view, you can make your Ring Package Detection a reliable and valuable part of your home security setup.
