Sricam No 24/7 Recording: A How-To Guide
While motion detection is useful, sometimes you need the peace of mind that comes with knowing everything is being recorded, 24/7. If your Sricam is only recording short clips when it detects movement, you may be wondering how to enable continuous recording.
This guide will explain the requirements and walk you through the settings to enable 24/7 recording on your compatible Sricam camera.
### Understanding the Requirements
Before you dive into the settings, it's crucial to understand that 24/7 recording depends on two things: your camera model and your storage method.
- Camera Model: Not all Sricam cameras support this feature. It's typically found on their indoor and outdoor security cameras rather than battery-powered models, as continuous recording would drain a battery very quickly. Always check your product's specifications first.
- Local Storage: To record 24/7, the camera needs a place to save the constant stream of video footage. This is almost always a microSD card that you insert directly into the camera or a Network Video Recorder (NVR). You cannot record 24/7 directly to the cloud.
### The Most Important Component: Your MicroSD Card
The choice of microSD card is the most common point of failure for 24/7 recording. Standard microSD cards are designed for storing photos or apps on a phone, not for the intense, constant writing required by a security camera.
- What you need: A High Endurance or Video Monitoring microSD card. Brands like SanDisk (High Endurance) or WD (Purple) design these cards specifically for this task.
- Why it matters: These cards are built to withstand thousands of hours of rewriting data. A standard card will fail quickly, leading to lost footage, recording gaps, or the camera ceasing to record altogether.
- Speed and Size: Choose a Class 10, U3 card for smooth HD video recording. The size you need depends on how many days of footage you want to store. A 128GB card can typically store several days of continuous footage before it starts overwriting the oldest files.
Enabling 24/7 Recording in the Sricam App
Once you have the right hardware, enabling the feature is straightforward.
- Install the MicroSD Card: Make sure the camera is powered off. Insert your high-endurance microSD card into the card slot until it clicks into place. Power the camera back on.
- Format the Card: Open the Sricam app and navigate to your camera's settings. Find the 'Storage Settings' or 'SD Card Management' menu. You should see the card's capacity listed. It is highly recommended that you use the 'Format' option within the app. This will erase the card and set it up in the correct file format for the camera.
- Change the Recording Mode: In the camera's settings, look for 'Record Settings'. Inside this menu, you will likely see two options:
- Alarm Recording / Motion Detection Recording: This is the default mode, where the camera only records when it senses motion.
- General Recording / Continuous Recording: This is the 24/7 mode.
- Select 'General Recording' or 'Continuous Recording' to enable the feature.
- Enable Loop Recording: Ensure that 'Loop Recording' (sometimes called 'Overwrite') is turned on. This is a critical setting. When the microSD card becomes full, this function will automatically delete the oldest footage to make space for the new recordings, ensuring the camera never stops recording.
Checking if it's Working
After changing the settings, go to the video playback or timeline view in your app. Instead of seeing small, separate clips, you should now see a continuous, unbroken timeline of video that you can scroll through. If you see gaps, it's a sign that there may be an issue with your microSD card's performance.
