Troubleshooting a Swann Camera That Has Stopped Working
A Swann security camera that suddenly stops working can be a major concern. Whether it's completely dead, showing as "Offline" in the app, or simply not recording, the loss of your security feed leaves your property vulnerable. The good news is that most issues can be resolved with some basic troubleshooting.
This guide will walk you through the most common reasons why a Swann camera fails and how to get it back up and running quickly.
Step 1: Diagnose the Problem - Power or Network?
The first step is to determine the type of failure. Broadly, issues fall into two categories: power problems or network problems.
-
Power Issue Symptoms:
- The camera is completely unresponsive.
- No status lights (LEDs) are on.
- The camera's night vision IR lights do not activate in the dark.
- The camera feels cold to the touch, indicating no power is flowing through it.
-
Network Issue Symptoms:
- The camera has a solid or flashing status light, but it appears as "Offline" in the Swann Security app.
- The live view won't load, showing a spinning wheel or a connection error.
- You receive no motion alerts.
- The camera was working fine until you changed your router or Wi-Fi password.
Step 2: Solving Power Issues
If you suspect a power problem, follow these checks in order.
1. Check the Wall Outlet
Confirm the power socket is working. Plug another device, like a phone charger, into the same socket to see if it gets power. If not, the outlet is the problem. Also, check if the outlet is controlled by a light switch that may have been turned off.
2. Inspect All Cable Connections
Whether your camera uses a DC power adapter or a BNC cable for power (as in wired DVR systems), trace the entire length of the cable.
- For Wi-Fi cameras: Ensure the power adapter is securely plugged into both the wall and the back of the camera.
- For wired DVR systems: Check that the BNC and power connectors are firmly attached to both the camera and the DVR/power splitter. A loose connection is a very common point of failure.
3. Examine the Power Cable for Damage
Look for any visible signs of damage to the power cable, such as cuts, frays, or sharp bends. A damaged cable cannot deliver stable power and must be replaced.
4. Test with a Different Power Source
If possible, try a different power adapter or cable. For wired systems, you can try swapping the power port on the DVR with a port from a camera that is working. If the faulty camera powers on, you know the original power adapter or port was the issue.
Step 3: Solving Network Issues
If the camera has power but isn't connecting, it's a network problem.
1. Power Cycle Everything (The Universal Fix)
The most effective first step for any network issue is to restart your equipment. This allows devices to refresh their connections.
- Turn off the Swann camera (unplug it from power).
- Turn off your internet router and/or modem.
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Turn on your modem first and wait for it to fully connect (usually 1-2 minutes).
- Turn on your router and wait for it to fully connect.
- Finally, power on your Swann camera again.
Wait about 5-10 minutes and check the app to see if the camera has come back online. This process resolves the vast majority of offline issues.
2. Check Wi-Fi Signal Strength
If the camera is far from your Wi-Fi router, it may have a weak and unstable connection. Try temporarily moving the camera closer to the router. If it connects and works reliably, you may need to install a Wi-Fi extender or mesh system for better coverage.
3. Reconnect After Network Changes
Have you recently changed your Internet Service Provider, installed a new router, or changed your Wi-Fi network name (SSID) or password? If so, your camera doesn't know how to connect anymore. You will need to go through the camera's setup process again within the Swann app to connect it to the new network.
4. Factory Reset (Last Resort)
If nothing else works, you can perform a factory reset. This will return the camera to its original settings, deleting its connection to your account and your Wi-Fi network.
- Find the small, recessed reset button on the camera body.
- With the camera powered on, use a paperclip or SIM ejector tool to press and hold the reset button for 15-20 seconds.
- The camera will usually provide an audio or visual cue that it is resetting.
- Once it has rebooted, you will need to add it to your Swann app again as if it were a new device.
