TP-Link Camera Not Detecting Packages? Here’s the Fix.
The package detection feature on TP-Link's Tapo and Kasa cameras is an excellent tool for keeping track of your deliveries and preventing porch piracy. It’s designed to give you specific, real-time alerts when a parcel is dropped off, offering more insight than a simple motion alert. However, if you're not receiving these notifications, or the feature seems to be missing entirely, it can be a real concern. This troubleshooting guide will help you identify the cause of the problem and get your package detection working reliably.
Key Reasons for Missing Package Detection
When package detection fails, it's typically due to a configuration issue rather than a hardware fault. Let's look at the most common culprits.
Tapo Care Subscription is Required
This is the number one reason for the feature not working. Package detection is considered an advanced AI feature and is only available to users with an active Tapo Care subscription plan. The free plan does not include this functionality.
Feature is Not Enabled
Even with a subscription, you often have to manually enable package detection in the camera's settings. It may not be turned on by default.
Poor Camera Placement
The camera needs a clear and direct view of where packages are typically left. If the area is obscured, poorly lit, or too far away, the AI will struggle to identify a parcel.
Incorrect Activity Zone
If you use activity zones to monitor specific areas, you must ensure that the zone covers your doorstep or delivery spot. If the package is left outside the designated zone, it will not trigger an alert.
Outdated App or Firmware
An older version of the Tapo or Kasa app, or outdated camera firmware, can contain bugs that prevent advanced features from working correctly.
How to Enable and Optimise Package Detection
Follow these steps to resolve the issue and start receiving package alerts.
1. Verify Your Tapo Care Subscription
First, ensure your account has the required subscription plan.
- Open the Tapo App: Launch the app on your smartphone.
- Navigate to Camera Settings: Select the camera you are having issues with.
- Look for Tapo Care: In the settings menu, you should see an option for Tapo Care. Tap on it to confirm that your subscription is active for that specific camera. If not, you will need to subscribe.
2. Enable Package Detection in Settings
Once you've confirmed your subscription, you need to turn the feature on.
- Go to Device Settings: From the live view of your camera, tap the gear icon to enter the main settings.
- Select 'Detection & Alerts': This is where all motion-related settings are located.
- Find 'AI Detection': Inside this menu, you should see several toggles for different types of AI detection.
- Turn on 'Package Detection': Make sure the switch next to "Package Detection" is turned on.
3. Optimise Camera Positioning and View
A good view is essential for the AI to work effectively.
- Clear Line of Sight: Ensure your camera has an unobstructed view of your entire delivery area.
- Angle and Height: Mount the camera high enough to get a top-down view but not so high that the packages look like small, unidentifiable dots. A height of 2-3 metres is generally effective.
- Good Lighting: Make sure the area is well-lit, especially at night. If your camera has a built-in spotlight, ensure it is configured to turn on with motion.
4. Configure a Package Detection Zone
Tell the camera exactly where to look for packages.
- Go to 'Activity Zones': This is usually within the 'Detection & Alerts' settings.
- Create a New Zone: Set up a specific zone that covers only the area where a delivery person is likely to place a package. This precision prevents false alerts from people just walking past.
- Assign the Feature: Some versions of the app may require you to assign the package detection feature to this specific zone.
5. Update Everything
Make sure your entire system is running the latest software.
- Update the App: Visit your phone's app store and check for any updates to the TP-Link Tapo or Kasa app.
- Update Camera Firmware: In the camera's settings, find the 'Device Info' or 'Firmware' section and check for an update. Install it if one is available.
By ensuring you have the right subscription and carefully configuring your camera's settings and placement, you can solve the problem of missing package detection and regain peace of mind over your deliveries.
