Your Wyze Camera's Firmware Update Failed — Here's How to Fix It
A failed firmware update can leave your Wyze camera unresponsive or non-functional. Common causes include unstable internet, low battery, or incompatible firmware files. Fortunately, Wyze-specific tools and model instructions can help you resolve this issue efficiently. Follow these steps to restore your device.
First Steps for Your Wyze Issue
Before diving into complex troubleshooting, try these 30-second checks:
- Power cycle your camera: Unplug the power cable (or remove the battery for battery-powered models) for 30 seconds, then reconnect.
- Restart the Wyze App: Close the app completely and reopen it. This clears temporary glitches.
- Check the LED status: A solid green light indicates a successful connection. Blinking or red lights may signal a failed update.
- Verify power supply: Ensure your camera is using the correct power cable. For wired models, check the transformer voltage (must supply 16-24V AC).
- Confirm app login: Log out of the Wyze App and log back in using your account credentials.
Working Through Your Wyze Issue
Check Your Wi-Fi Band Settings
Wyze cameras require a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network for stable firmware updates. Many UK ISP routers use a single SSID for both bands, but this can cause instability. To confirm:
- Open the Wyze App and go to Device Health → Signal Strength.
- Ensure your camera is connected to a 2.4GHz network. If connected to 5GHz, switch to 2.4GHz in your router settings.
- For Wyze Cam OG and Pan v3 models, avoid 5GHz as they only support 2.4GHz (802.11 b/g/n).
Update Firmware via the Wyze App
- Open the Wyze App and tap Account → Firmware Update.
- Check if an update is available for your camera. If so, follow the on-screen instructions.
- Ensure your camera is connected to a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network and has at least 20% battery (or is hardwired).
- If the update fails, try again after 30 minutes. Avoid using 5GHz during this process.
Manual Firmware Flashing via SD Card
For advanced users, manual firmware flashing may be required. This process is model-specific:
- Wyze Battery Cam Pro: Use a 32GB FAT32 SD card. Format it using a computer, then copy the firmware file to the root directory. Insert the card and power on the camera.
- Wyze Cam OG/Pan v3: Use a 32GB FAT32 SD card. Ensure the camera is connected to a 2.4GHz network and has a charged battery (80% or higher).
- Important: Only use firmware files from the official Wyze website. Third-party files may cause instability.
RTSP Firmware Installation
Wyze RTSP firmware requires a separate manual flash. This firmware is designed for advanced users who need low-latency streaming:
- Download the RTSP firmware from the Wyze website.
- Copy the file to a 32GB FAT32 SD card.
- Insert the card into your camera and power it on.
- After the firmware is installed, you'll need to flash back to the standard firmware using the same process. This ensures compatibility with the Wyze App.
Factory Reset Your Wyze Camera
If all else fails, perform a factory reset using model-specific instructions:
- Wyze Battery Cam Pro: Remove the microSD card. With the camera powered on, press and hold the setup button on the bottom for 10 seconds.
- Wyze Cam OG: Remove the microSD card. With the camera plugged into power, press and hold the SETUP button for 10 seconds.
- Wyze Cam Pan v3: Remove the microSD card. With the camera plugged in, press and hold the setup button for 10-20 seconds.
After resetting, reconnect to Wi-Fi and check for updates in the Account tab → Firmware Update.
Going Further with Wyze Firmware Support
Use Wyze's Smart Support Tool
The Wyze App includes a Smart Support self-diagnosis tool. To access it:
- Go to Device Health → Connection Status.
- The app will check signal strength, firmware compatibility, and network stability.
- If the tool identifies a problem, follow its recommendations. For example, it may suggest switching to a 2.4GHz network or checking the transformer voltage.
Contact Wyze Support
If the issue persists, contact Wyze support via https://support.wyze.com. Provide the following details:
- Model of your camera (e.g. Wyze Cam v4, Wyze Battery Cam Pro)
- Firmware version (if available)
- Error messages or symptoms observed
- Steps you've already tried
Avoid using 5GHz networks during this process, as they may prevent reconnection.
Why This Happens with Wyze Firmware Devices
Firmware updates can fail due to several factors, many of which are specific to Wyze devices:
- Low battery or unstable power: Battery-powered cameras must have at least 20% charge. Wired models should use a transformer that supplies 16-24V AC.
- Incorrect Wi-Fi band: Wyze cameras require 2.4GHz for stable updates. Many UK ISP routers use single SSID for both bands, which can cause instability.
- Firmware file incompatibility: Using third-party firmware or incorrect versions (e.g. RTSP firmware on a standard camera) may cause failure.
- SD card formatting: Manual firmware flashing requires a 32GB FAT32 card. Larger or improperly formatted cards may fail to flash.
Keeping Your Wyze System Running Smoothly
To avoid future firmware issues:
- Always use a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network for updates. Avoid 5GHz unless your router supports separate SSIDs.
- Ensure your camera's battery is fully charged (or use a stable power source) before updating.
- Use a 32GB FAT32 SD card for manual firmware flashes. Avoid reusing cards for other purposes.
- Regularly check for updates in the Wyze App → Account → Firmware Update.
Full disclosure: we built scOS to address exactly this the frustration of Wyze cameras that fail to update due to unstable networks or incompatible firmware. scOS uses permanently powered cameras connected via Ethernet for uninterrupted performance.
Is It Time for a Wyze Firmware Upgrade?
If your Wyze camera is beyond repair, consider the following:
- Battery-powered cameras: Typically last 3-5 years. Replace if the battery holds less than 20% charge or if the camera fails to connect after multiple resets.
- Wired cameras: Last 5-8 years. Replace if the camera fails to update despite following all steps.
- UK consumer rights: Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, you have up to 6 years to claim faulty goods (5 years in Scotland). If your camera is under warranty, contact Wyze support for repair or replacement.
For professional installation, expect costs between £150-£300 per camera, depending on complexity and location.
