Halstead (Braintree) reported a crime rate of 5.8 per 1,000 residents in September 2023, placing it 27.5% below the UK average of 8.0 per 1,000. This relatively low rate, despite the area’s built-up nature, reflects a combination of local characteristics and seasonal influences. Violence and sexual offences accounted for the largest share of crimes, representing 43.7% of the total, followed by anti-social behaviour (17.2%) and criminal damage and arson (9.2%). These figures align with the area’s profile as a small urban centre where social interactions are frequent, particularly during the transition period of September, which coincides with the start of the academic year. The seasonal context—back to school, university freshers, and the gradual onset of darker evenings—may contribute to the higher prevalence of violence and anti-social behaviour, as younger populations become more active in the evenings. However, the overall crime rate remains significantly lower than the UK average, suggesting that the area’s community policing efforts, local engagement strategies, and the relatively low population density of the built-up area may play a role in maintaining this lower level of criminal activity. The data also shows that property crimes, including shoplifting and burglary, are low compared to the UK average, with burglary at 69% below and shoplifting at 11% below the national figure. This could be attributed to the area’s smaller retail footprint and lower foot traffic compared to larger urban centres. Nevertheless, the sharp rise in drug-related offences—jumping from zero to four incidents—raises questions about whether this reflects a temporary spike or a new trend that may require targeted intervention.
