Anti-social behaviour dominated Bodmin’s crime picture in April 2023, accounting for nearly half (48.9%) of all reported incidents. This category, at 45 cases, far exceeded the UK average of 1.2 per 1,000 residents by 129%, making it the most striking feature of the month’s crime data. The overall crime rate of 5.4 per 1,000 residents placed Bodmin 28% below the UK average of 7.5 per 1,000, a figure that reflects the area’s relatively low levels of violent and property crime. Violence and sexual offences (27 cases) were 38% below the UK average, while property crimes — including shoplifting, vehicle crime, and other theft — collectively represented 23.5% of total incidents. The seasonal context of April, with its Easter holidays and warmer weather, may have contributed to increased outdoor activity, which could partially explain the rise in anti-social behaviour. However, the absence of significant increases in property crime contrasts with typical patterns seen in tourist-heavy or retail-focused areas, suggesting that Bodmin’s built-up area operates within a distinct socio-economic framework. The data also highlights a marked drop in drugs-related offences (from 5 to 1) and public order issues (from 5 to 1), which may reflect temporary changes in community dynamics or law enforcement priorities.
