In May 2023, Bodmin's crime rate stood at 6.3 per 1,000 residents, a figure 21.3% below the UK average of 8.0. This relatively low rate, combined with the dominance of violent crimes over property crimes, suggests a distinct crime profile shaped by local factors. Violence and sexual offences accounted for 43.4% of all reported crimes, followed by anti-social behaviour (32.1%) and criminal damage and arson (11.3%). This imbalance between violent and property crime may reflect the area's character as a mixed-use built-up area within Cornwall, where social interactions in public spaces could contribute to higher rates of violent incidents. The seasonal context of May—marked by longer evenings and increased outdoor activity—may partly explain the prominence of violent crime, as well as the 200% rise in criminal damage and arson. However, property crimes remained comparatively low, with only 22 incidents reported, suggesting that targeted policing or community initiatives may have mitigated risks in this category. The UK comparison further underscores Bodmin's performance: while anti-social behaviour was 50% above the national average, other categories such as vehicle crime and shoplifting were significantly below UK levels. This mixed picture highlights the importance of contextualising crime data against both local conditions and broader national trends.
