Dacorum’s crime rate in December 2023 stood at 6.7 per 1,000 residents, placing it 6.9% below the UK average of 7.2 per 1,000. This relatively low overall rate masks significant variations in crime types, with anti-social behaviour emerging as a striking outlier. At 1.5 per 1,000 residents, anti-social behaviour accounted for 22.4% of all reported crimes, a figure 61% above the UK average. This discrepancy may be influenced by local dynamics, such as the concentration of retail and residential areas, which could foster environments conducive to disorder. Violence and sexual offences, the most common crime category (26.9% of total), were 31% below the UK average, likely reflecting the area’s character as a commuter belt or suburban district with lower levels of street-level conflict. Shoplifting, the third most common crime (12.1% of total), surged by 30% compared to November, driven by the festive shopping season and increased foot traffic in retail zones. Seasonal factors, including dark evenings and holiday-related activities, may also have contributed to higher rates of criminal damage and arson, which rose by 21.8% in December. These trends illustrate how Dacorum’s crime profile is shaped by a combination of local geography, seasonal rhythms, and community-specific factors, even as it maintains a lower-than-average overall rate compared to the UK.
