February 2024 saw an unexpected surge in anti-social behaviour, which accounted for nearly half of all reported crimes in Mynydd Isa. At 3.0 crimes per 1,000 residents, the area's crime rate remains 57.7% below the UK average of 7.1 per 1,000. This stark contrast highlights the area's generally low crime profile, though the dominance of anti-social behaviour as the most common offence raises questions about local dynamics. With only 17 crimes recorded across a population of 5,630, the month reflected a pre-spring lull typical of winter in this built-up area. Anti-social behaviour, at 1.4 per 1,000, exceeded the UK average by 33%, suggesting a unique local challenge in managing community conduct. Meanwhile, violent crimes fell to 4 (0.7 per 1,000), a figure 72% below the UK average, consistent with the area's small, close-knit community structure. Other theft and public order offences also remained well below national averages, reinforcing Mynydd Isa's position as one of Wales' safest built-up areas. The seasonal context of February—a month marked by reduced outdoor activity and colder weather—likely contributed to the lower overall crime rate, though the rise in anti-social behaviour may reflect indoor social patterns during the winter.
