Anti-social behaviour emerged as the dominant crime category in Cwmavon during June 2025, accounting for 32% of all reported crimes. This was followed by violence and sexual offences (24%) and public order issues (20%), highlighting a pattern where non-violent but disruptive incidents outnumbered more severe crimes. The overall crime rate of 4.9 per 1,000 residents placed the area 39.5% below the UK average of 8.1, a marked contrast to the national profile. This discrepancy may be attributed to Cwmavon’s built-up character within Neath Port Talbot, where community cohesion and local policing efforts could contribute to lower rates of violent crime. The seasonal context of June, with its longer days and the onset of summer tourism, may have influenced the prominence of anti-social behaviour, as increased public gatherings in local spaces could exacerbate such incidents. However, the relatively low levels of property crime—only 5 incidents compared to 25 total—suggest that Cwmavon’s crime profile is distinct from typical urban centres, where theft and burglary often dominate. The UK comparison further underscores the area’s safety, particularly given the 58% deficit in violence and sexual offences compared to the national average. This suggests that local factors, such as a lower population density or stronger community networks, may play a role in mitigating more severe crimes. The data also reveals that public order offences, though lower in absolute numbers, exceeded the UK average by 69%, a finding that warrants attention to local policing strategies in managing public spaces.
