In November 2023, Tadworth and Epsom Downs recorded a crime rate of 5.4 per 1,000 residents, placing the area 28% below the UK average of 7.5 per 1,000. This marked deviation from national trends underscores the unique character of the built-up area, which appears to have a lower incidence of violent crime compared to the broader UK context. The breakdown of offences revealed a shift in the crime profile, with violent and sexual offences (52 cases) outnumbering property crimes (43 cases) for the first time this year—a reversal that may be influenced by seasonal factors such as the timing of Bonfire Night and the associated increase in public gatherings. The top three crime categories were violence and sexual offences (36.1% of total), followed by anti-social behaviour (21.5%) and vehicle crime (13.2%). These figures align with the area’s likely profile as a commuter-oriented suburb within Reigate and Banstead, where anti-social behaviour and vehicle crime are common in residential and commercial zones. The relatively low rate of violent crime compared to the UK average may be attributed to the area’s lower population density and the presence of well-maintained public spaces that discourage disorderly conduct. However, the seasonal context of November—characterised by shorter days and the pre-Christmas shopping rush—may have contributed to the increased focus on public order offences and the corresponding drop in such incidents later in the month. The data also highlights the importance of contextualising crime trends within local rhythms, such as the impact of festive events and the seasonal shift in community activity.
