Bacup's crime profile in January 2024 revealed stark contrasts between local patterns and UK-wide averages. The area's crime rate of 11.2 per 1,000 residents—51.4% above the UK average of 7.4—underscored persistent challenges in public safety. Violence and sexual offences dominated, accounting for 34.4% of all reported crimes, significantly exceeding the UK average of 2.6 per 1,000. Anti-social behaviour followed closely at 3.7 per 1,000, 274% above the UK norm, reflecting tensions in community spaces. Shoplifting, at 1.1 per 1,000, was also 93% above the UK average, likely driven by local retail dynamics despite January's typically reduced footfall. Seasonal factors, such as shorter days and post-holiday economic pressures, may partly explain these patterns, though the absence of a clear seasonal trend for violent crimes suggests deeper, more entrenched issues. The area's elevated rates of anti-social behaviour and violence contrast with lower-than-average figures for vehicle crime and criminal damage, indicating that local conditions—such as the density of residential areas and the presence of public spaces—play a critical role in shaping crime profiles. These findings highlight the need for targeted strategies that address both immediate incidents and the structural factors contributing to the area's elevated crime rates.
