Horbury's crime rate in May 2023 reached 9.8 per 1,000 residents, marking a 22.5% increase above the UK average of 8.0 per 1,000. This figure reflects a 51.7% rise compared to April's rate of 6.5 per 1,000, underscoring a troubling upward trend in local crime statistics. The most significant category was violence and sexual offences, which accounted for 53.9% of all reported crimes (49 incidents), a rate 91% higher than the UK average. Public order offences followed closely, contributing 15.4% of the total (14 incidents) and showing a 127% increase over the UK average. The seasonal context of May—characterised by longer evenings, bank holidays, and increased outdoor drinking—likely contributes to these patterns, as socialising in public spaces tends to drive both violent and public order incidents. Anti-social behaviour, while rising sharply by 100% (from 5 to 10 cases), remained 17% below the UK average, suggesting some local factors may be moderating this category. The data also reveals a mixed picture for property crimes: criminal damage and arson fell by 16.7%, while shoplifting and burglary both saw increases, albeit from very low base numbers. This contrast highlights the need for targeted interventions in areas where violent crime remains high relative to national trends.
