Violence and sexual offences dominated South Kirkby’s crime profile in October 2025, accounting for 33% of all reported incidents. This category, which recorded 30 cases at a rate of 3.4 per 1,000 residents, was 28% above the UK average, a stark contrast to the area’s overall rate of 10.3 per 1,000 — itself 33.8% higher than the national average. Shoplifting, the second most common crime, surged to 18 incidents (19.8% of total), with a rate of 2.0 per 1,000 — 217% above the UK average. This suggests a significant localised issue in retail environments, possibly exacerbated by Halloween-related activity or increased foot traffic in commercial areas. Anti-social behaviour, while below the UK average, remained a notable concern at 9 incidents (9.9% of total), highlighting ongoing challenges in community engagement. Seasonal factors likely played a role, as the transition to darker evenings and the approach of Christmas shopping season may have influenced both violent and property crime trends. The area’s crime picture, shaped by its industrial heritage and proximity to Wakefield’s urban core, continues to reflect a combination of economic and social dynamics, with targeted interventions needed to address persistent issues in retail and public spaces.
