Foscam No Local Storage? SD Card Recording Fixes
Using a microSD card for local storage is a fantastic feature of Foscam cameras, allowing you to record video footage without needing a cloud subscription or an external NVR. However, it can be a major source of frustration when the camera fails to recognise the card or save recordings. This troubleshooting guide will cover the most common reasons for SD card issues and how to resolve them.
## The Importance of the Right SD Card and Formatting
Before we dive into settings, it's crucial to address the two most common points of failure: the card itself and its format.
- Use a Compatible SD Card: Not all microSD cards are created equal. For the continuous writing that video recording requires, you need a high-endurance card.
- Requirement: Always use a Class 10 or UHS-1 (U1) rated card from a reputable brand (like SanDisk, Samsung, or Kingston).
- Avoid: Cheap, unbranded, or counterfeit cards are highly unreliable and are a primary cause of recording failures.
- Format the SD Card in the Camera: This is a critical step. Simply inserting the card is not enough. The camera needs to format the card to its specific file system.
- How to Format:
- Log in to your camera via the Foscam app or the web interface on a computer.
- Navigate to the 'Settings' menu.
- Find 'Storage' or 'SD Card'.
- You should see the card's capacity listed. Select the 'Format' option.
- Warning: This will erase all data currently on the card.
- If the card is not detected at all, try removing and re-inserting it carefully while the camera is powered off.

## Configuring Your Recording Settings
Once the camera recognises the formatted SD card, you need to tell it when and how to record. Foscam cameras offer two main modes: schedule recording and motion-triggered recording.
### 1. Setting Up Motion Detection Recording
This is the most common method, saving space by only recording when there is activity.
- In the camera's settings, go to 'Action Detection' (or 'Motion Detection').
- Ensure 'Motion Detection' is enabled.
- Set the 'Actions' or 'Linkage Action'. You must tick the box for 'Record'. If this is not selected, the camera will detect motion but will not save a video clip.
- You can also set a schedule here, defining the times and days you want motion detection to be active.
### 2. Setting Up Continuous (Schedule) Recording
If you want the camera to record 24/7, you need to set up a recording schedule.
- In the settings, find the 'Recording' or 'Schedule Recording' menu.
- Enable the schedule. You will see a grid representing the hours of the day for the entire week.
- Select the time blocks you want the camera to record in. To record 24/7, you would select all the blocks.
- Crucially, make sure the recording type for this schedule is set to 'Record' or 'Continuous Record', not just 'Motion Record'.
## What to Do When the Card is Full
By default, your camera may stop recording when the SD card is full. To ensure it continues recording, you must enable loop recording.
- Enable Overwrite/Loop Recording: In the 'Storage' or 'Recording' settings, look for an option named 'Loop Recording', 'Overwrite', or 'Recycle'.
- Make sure this option is enabled. This will allow the camera to automatically delete the oldest footage to make room for new recordings, ensuring the camera never stops recording due to a full card.
If you have followed all these steps and are still experiencing issues, the SD card itself may be faulty. Try testing the card in another device, or, if possible, test a different known-working SD card in your Foscam camera.
