Foscam Package Detection Missing? Here’s How to Fix It
Foscam's package detection feature provides peace of mind, alerting you the moment a delivery arrives at your doorstep. When this feature fails to work, it can be concerning. If you're not receiving package alerts, this guide will walk you through the common causes and solutions to get it working reliably.
Prerequisite: Check for Compatibility and Subscription
Before you begin troubleshooting, it's essential to confirm two things:
- Camera Model: Package detection is an advanced, AI-driven feature. It is not available on all Foscam models. Check the product page or manual for your specific camera to verify that it supports this functionality.
- Cloud Subscription: On many models, advanced detection features like package detection require an active Foscam Cloud subscription. Log in to your Foscam account and ensure your subscription plan is active and includes this feature.
Step 1: Enable Package Detection in the App
It's possible that the feature is simply turned off. You need to ensure it's enabled within your camera's settings.
- Open the Foscam app and select the camera you want to configure.
- Navigate to the Camera Settings (often represented by a gear icon).
- Look for a menu labelled "Alerts," "Detection," or "AI Services."
- Inside this menu, you should see separate toggles for different detection types. Make sure the toggle for "Package Detection" is switched on.
- Important: Note that this is often a separate setting from general "Motion Detection." You must enable the specific package detection feature.
Step 2: Optimise Camera Placement and View
The performance of any AI detection is highly dependent on the camera's field of view.
- Clear Line of Sight: The camera must have a clear, unobstructed view of the area where packages are typically left. Bushes, pillars, or garden ornaments can block the view and prevent detection.
- Angle and Height: Position the camera so it looks down at the delivery area from a slight angle. A camera that is too high may not see the package clearly, while one that is too low might have its view obscured by the package itself.
- Lighting: Ensure the area is well-lit, especially at night. If your camera's night vision isn't sufficient, consider adding a porch light. Poor lighting can significantly impact the AI's ability to identify a package.
Step 3: Define an Activity Zone
If your camera's view includes a busy area, like a public pavement or a road, it can confuse the detection algorithm. Use the "Activity Zone" or "Detection Zone" feature to focus the camera's attention.
- In the camera's detection settings, find the Activity Zone option.
- Draw a specific zone that covers only your porch, doorstep, or the exact area where deliveries are made.
- This tells the camera to ignore motion outside of this zone, reducing false alarms and allowing the AI to focus on what matters.
Step 4: Check Notification and Network Settings
If detection is happening but you're not getting the alert, the issue may lie with notifications or your network.
- App Notifications: In your phone's main settings, ensure the Foscam app has permission to send you push notifications.
- Wi-Fi Signal: A weak or unstable Wi-Fi connection can prevent the camera from uploading the detection event and sending the alert in a timely manner. Check the camera's Wi-Fi signal strength in the app settings. If it's weak, you may need to move your router closer or use a Wi-Fi extender.
- Firmware Update: Ensure your camera's firmware is up to date. Manufacturers regularly release updates to improve performance and fix bugs related to detection features. Check for updates within the Foscam app.
