Suffering from Tapo Notification Lag? Here's How to Fix It
A security camera's effectiveness hinges on timely alerts. When you receive a motion notification minutes after the event happened, it's often too late to react. If your Tapo camera's notifications are consistently delayed, it's a frustrating problem that undermines your home security.
This lag can be caused by a bottleneck at several points between your camera and your phone. This troubleshooting guide will help you identify the source of the delay and take steps to ensure your alerts arrive instantly.
Step 1: Analyse the End-to-End Journey of an Alert
First, it's helpful to understand the path a notification takes. A delay can happen at any of these stages:
- Camera to Router: The Tapo camera detects motion and sends the data packet to your Wi-Fi router.
- Router to Tapo Cloud: Your router sends the information over the internet to Tapo's cloud servers.
- Cloud to Your Phone: The Tapo servers process the data and send a push notification to your smartphone via Apple's or Google's notification service.
- Phone to You: Your phone receives the push notification and displays it on your screen.
A delay at any of these steps will result in a notification lag.
Step 2: Strengthen Your Camera's Wi-Fi Connection
The most common bottleneck is the connection between the camera and your router. If the signal is weak, it takes longer for the camera to successfully upload the motion event data.
- Check Signal Strength: In the Tapo app, go to your camera's settings and find the Wi-Fi signal strength indicator. If it is weak (one or two bars), this is likely a major cause of the delay.
- Move Your Router: Try moving your Wi-Fi router closer to the camera to improve the signal.
- Use a Wi-Fi Extender: If you can't move the router, installing a Wi-Fi range extender near the camera can provide a much-needed signal boost.
- Reduce Interference: Keep the camera and router away from other electronic devices that can cause interference, such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, and large metal objects.
Step 3: Optimise Your Smartphone's Settings
The problem might not be with your camera at all, but with your phone. Modern smartphones use aggressive battery-saving features that can delay or "batch" notifications from apps.
For Android Users:
- Disable Battery Optimisation: Go to Settings > Apps > Tapo. Find the Battery or Power usage settings and set it to 'Unrestricted' or 'Not optimised'. This prevents the operating system from putting the app to sleep.
- Allow Background Data: In the same app settings menu, ensure the Tapo app has permission to use 'Background data' and 'Unrestricted data usage'.
For iPhone Users:
- Check Background App Refresh: Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and ensure it is turned on for the Tapo app.
- Enable Push Notifications: Go to Settings > Notifications > Tapo and make sure that 'Allow Notifications' and options like 'Lock Screen' and 'Banners' are enabled.
Step 4: Check Your Phone's Internet Connection
The speed of the alerts arriving also depends on your phone's own internet connection.
- If you are on a weak Wi-Fi signal or in an area with poor mobile data coverage (e.g., one bar of 4G), the notification will struggle to get through from the server.
- Try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data on your phone to see if the notification speed improves on one over the other.
Step 5: Update and Restart
Finally, simple maintenance can often resolve software glitches that may cause delays.
- Update the Tapo App: Make sure you have the latest version of the Tapo app from your app store.
- Update Camera Firmware: In the app, check for and install any available firmware updates for your camera.
- Restart Everything: A classic for a reason. Reboot your camera (by unplugging it and plugging it back in) and your smartphone. This can clear temporary issues and re-establish a fresh connection.
By improving the Wi-Fi signal to your camera and ensuring your phone is set up to receive notifications instantly, you can significantly reduce or eliminate that frustrating notification lag.
