Violence and sexual offences dominated Caerphilly’s crime profile in December 2023, accounting for 43.2% of all reported incidents, far exceeding the UK average. This category’s rate of 3.4 per 1,000 residents was 30% higher than the national average of 2.6 per 1,000, a disparity that likely reflects local social dynamics and the area’s demographic profile. The overall crime rate of 7.8 per 1,000 residents placed Caerphilly 8.3% above the UK average, a gap that, while notable, is consistent with historical trends in similar urban centres. Seasonal factors played a pivotal role, as the Christmas shopping peak, extended dark evenings, and holiday-related social activities likely contributed to the high volume of violent incidents. Anti-social behaviour and criminal damage also featured prominently, with rates 29% and 61% above the UK average, respectively. These findings suggest that the area’s crime profile is shaped by a combination of year-round challenges and temporary spikes tied to the festive season. While property crimes such as shoplifting and burglary remained below UK averages, the dominance of violent crime underscores the need for targeted interventions in this category.
