Violence and sexual offences emerged as the dominant category in Ash and Ash Vale’s October 2024 crime profile, contributing 38.8% of all reported incidents. This category, at 1.9 per 1,000 residents, remains 29% below the UK average of 2.7 per 1,000. The area’s overall crime rate of 4.8 per 1,000—40.7% lower than the UK average—suggests a generally safe environment, though the concentration of violent crime raises questions about local factors. Anti-social behaviour, the second most common category, accounted for 19.8% of incidents and was 22% below the UK average. This could indicate a relatively stable community, though the prevalence of anti-social behaviour may reflect the area’s density of residential and commercial spaces. Public order offences, while lower than the UK average, saw a sharp increase of 62.5% in October, tied to Halloween activities and the transition to darker evenings. The seasonal context of October, with shorter days and colder weather, may have influenced patterns. The low rates of property crimes—such as vehicle crime (0.3 per 1,000) and burglary (0.3 per 1,000)—suggest that the area’s infrastructure and community policing efforts may be effective in deterring such offences. However, the 100% decline in shoplifting and other theft categories compared to the UK average highlights a stark contrast, due to the area’s smaller retail footprint or higher levels of local engagement in crime prevention. These patterns align with the characteristics of a built-up area within a larger urban centre, where social interactions and public spaces play a significant role in shaping crime dynamics.
