Abercarn's crime rate in August 2023 (6.1 per 1,000 residents) positioned it 24.7% below the UK average of 8.1 per 1,000, marking a significant deviation from national trends. This built-up area within Caerphilly, characterised by its mix of residential and commercial zones, exhibited a crime profile skewed towards violent offences, which accounted for 48.5% of all reported crimes. Violence and sexual offences (16 cases) remained 10% above the UK average for this category, suggesting a persistent local challenge despite the overall reduction in crime. Anti-social behaviour, the second most common offence (11 cases), was 39% above the UK average, potentially reflecting the area's dense population and limited public space for community activities. Conversely, property crimes were markedly lower than expected, with burglary (1 case) 41% below the UK average and vehicle crime (2 cases) 18% below. Seasonal factors may have influenced these patterns: August, a peak holiday month, typically increases burglary risk due to empty homes and tourist activity, yet Abercarn's rate was still lower than the UK norm. The interplay of these dynamics—where violent crime remains elevated while property crime is subdued—highlights the need for targeted interventions in high-risk areas, such as addressing anti-social behaviour through community engagement and bolstering security measures in vulnerable properties.
